FIRST AID FRACTURE: ESSENTIAL STEPS TO TAKE IMMEDIATELY
CALL EMERGENCY SERVICES
If the injury is severe, call 911 immediately. Check the patient’s breathing and responsiveness while waiting for help. Do not move them unless necessary.
RECOGNIZE FRACTURE SIGNS
Look for severe pain, swelling, bruising, deformity, or a grating sound. Fractures hurt more than sprains and require careful handling.
ASSESS THE SITUATION
Ensure the scene is safe. Check if the patient is awake and responsive. Call for help if they are unresponsive, bleeding heavily, or showing signs of shock.
FOLLOW THE ABCS
Airway, Breathing, Circulation. Make sure the airway is clear, the patient is breathing, and stop any bleeding to maintain circulation.
Keep the broken limb stable with a splint or sling. Proper positioning prevents further damage and reduces pain.
USE THE RICE METHOD
Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. This method reduces pain, swelling, and helps healing. Adjust for the injured body part carefully.
MANAGE SHOCK AND PAIN
Recognize signs of shock: pale skin, fast pulse, shallow breathing. Keep the patient warm, calm, and in a comfortable position.
SEEK PROFESSIONAL CARE
Red flags need urgent attention: severe pain, open fractures, numbness, or swelling. Transport the patient safely and communicate clearly with medical staff.
