Vaser Liposuction: Surgery and Recovery

On the day of your procedure, the focus is on your safety and comfort. A clear understanding of the surgical steps can help ease any pre-operative nerves and set you up for a positive experience.

The Vaser Liposuction Surgical Process

Zygoma reduction, or cheekbone reduction, is a cosmetic surgery that decreases the size and projection of the zygomatic bones those which give the cheeks their height and width. This surgery is sought by anyone wanting to achieve:

  • A slimmer, more oval facial profile
  • Improved facial balance between the upper, mid, and lower face
  • Enriched, softer contours for a youthful appearance

Because the procedure changes the underlying bone, the results are permanent. It’s vital to have the surgery carried out by a board-certified plastic surgeon with experience in facial bone surgery.

What to Expect on Surgery Day

Vaser Liposuction

The Vaser liposuction procedure is performed in a carefully controlled surgical environment. Here is a general overview of what happens:

  • Anesthesia: Depending on the extent of the treatment and the areas being addressed, you will receive either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. Your surgeon will have discussed the best option for you during your consultation. The primary goal is to ensure you are completely comfortable and pain-free throughout the procedure.
  • Tumescent Fluid Injection: Once the anesthesia has taken effect, a special saline solution called tumescent fluid is injected into the target areas. This solution contains lidocaine (a local anesthetic) and epinephrine (a medication that constricts blood vessels). This step helps numb the area, minimize bleeding, and make the fat easier to remove.
  • Vaser Technology in Action: Your surgeon will make small incisions, often placed in discreet locations to minimize visible scarring. A thin probe that emits high-frequency ultrasound waves is inserted through these incisions. The ultrasonic energy gently breaks apart and liquefies the fat cells while preserving other important tissues like blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue.
  • Fat Removal: After the fat is emulsified, a small cannula is used to gently suction it out of the body. The surgeon skillfully sculpts the area to create a smoother, more defined contour.
  • Duration: The length of the surgery can vary. A smaller, targeted area might take about an hour, while treating multiple areas could take three hours or more.

Once the procedure is complete, the small incisions are closed, and a compression garment is applied to the treated areas to help reduce swelling.

Immediate Post-Surgery Care

Vaser Liposuction

The first 48 hours after your surgery are crucial for a smooth start to your recovery. Your main job is to rest and allow your body to begin the healing process.

Managing Pain, Swelling, and Bruising

It is normal to experience some discomfort, swelling, and bruising after Vaser liposuction. Your surgical team will provide clear instructions to help you manage these side effects.

  • Pain Management: Your surgeon will prescribe pain medication to help you stay comfortable. Take it as directed, especially during the first few days.
  • Swelling and Bruising: These are most noticeable in the first week. Wearing your compression garment continuously is the most effective way to control swelling and support the healing tissues.
  • Diet and Hydration: Start with light foods and stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water. This helps flush out the anesthesia and aids in the healing process.
  • Activity Restrictions: Rest is essential. Avoid any strenuous activity or heavy lifting. Short, gentle walks are encouraged to promote circulation.

The Recovery Timeline: Week by Week

Recovery from Vaser liposuction occurs in stages. While everyone heals at a different pace, this timeline gives you a general idea of what to expect.

The First Week

This is the most intensive phase of recovery. You will likely feel tired, and the treated areas will be sore and swollen. Continue to wear your compression garment 24/7, except when showering. Focus on rest, hydration, and proper nutrition. Most patients can manage light activities at home, but should not return to work.

Weeks Two to Four

You will start to feel more like yourself. Swelling and bruising will noticeably decrease, and you may begin to see the early contours of your results. Most patients can return to desk jobs and light daily activities after about two weeks. You will continue to wear your compression garment, although your surgeon may allow you to remove it for short periods.

One to Six Months

By the one-month mark, you can typically resume most of your normal routine, including exercise, with your surgeon’s approval. A significant portion of the swelling will have resolved, giving you a much clearer picture of your new shape. However, minor residual swelling can persist for several months. Your final, fully refined results will become apparent around the six-month mark as all tissues settle into place.
