Fracture pain that increases or swelling that stays can be a warning. Learn the early signs that a fracture may not be healing well.

WORSENING FRACTURE SIGNS YOU SHOULD NEVER IGNORE

WHAT NORMAL HEALING LOOKS LIKE

Healing pain should slowly decrease. Swelling and stiffness usually improve each week. If symptoms worsen instead, it may be a warning sign.

PAIN THAT GETS WORSE

Pain should gradually fade. Sharp or increasing pain, or pain that medication cannot control, may mean healing is not going well.

SWELLING THAT WON’T GO AWAY

Some swelling is normal, but swelling that stays the same or increases can signal infection, poor healing, or other complications.

SKIN CHANGES AROUND THE FRACTURE

Worsening bruises, redness, warmth, or dark discoloration may indicate tissue damage or infection around the fracture.

MOBILITY AND FUNCTION GETTING WORSE

If movement becomes harder, or if you suddenly cannot bear weight, the fracture may be unstable or not healing correctly.

SIGNS OF BONE MISALIGNMENT

Crooked appearance, uneven limbs, or grinding sensations can show that the bone is healing in the wrong position.

WARNING SIGNS OF INFECTION

Redness, fever, warmth, or fluid drainage are serious signs of infection at the fracture site and need urgent medical care.

WHEN TO GET IMMEDIATE HELP

Seek care right away if pain spikes, swelling worsens, numbness appears, or you see deformity or fever. Early action protects healing.
