The fatality rate of tuberculosis is the proportion of people diagnosed with the disease who die within a specific timeframe. We calculate this to evaluate the effectiveness of our treatment programs and the accessibility of care.

Untreated active TB compared with diagnosed and treated TB

Untreated active TB has a very high mortality rate, often exceeding 50% in some populations. In contrast, when we identify and treat drug-susceptible TB with a standard four-to-six-month antibiotic course, the survival rate is exceptionally high.

Factors that increase the risk of death

The tb death rate is not uniform. It increases significantly for individuals with HIV, diabetes, or undernutrition. Tobacco and harmful alcohol use also worsen outcomes, making integrated healthcare essential for reducing mortality.
