What It Means

What Breast Pain Means

Breast pain means aching, burning, soreness, tenderness, pressure, or sharp discomfort in one or both breasts. Breast soreness and pain may come from breast tissue, hormones, the ribs or muscles, or the chest wall behind the breast. Some pain is cyclical, changing with the menstrual cycle, while noncyclical pain does not follow a regular monthly pattern. The meaning of breast soreness can therefore vary depending on its location, timing, and other symptoms.

Cyclical pain

Often changes with hormonal shifts during the menstrual cycle and may affect both breasts, especially before a period.

Noncyclical pain

May be localized, persistent, sharp, or burning and can be linked with injury, inflammation, medication, or strain in the chest wall.

Get urgent help

Some breast-area pain is an emergency

Seek emergency evaluation for sudden or severe chest or breast-area pain with pressure, shortness of breath, sweating, fainting, nausea, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder. These symptoms can indicate a heart or other serious problem and should not be assumed to be ordinary breast pain. Also seek urgent care for rapidly worsening redness and swelling with fever or feeling very ill, which may indicate a serious infection.

Possible Causes

Possible Causes of Breast Pain

  • Hormonal changes around menstruation, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or menopause can cause breast soreness and pain.
  • Cysts and fibrocystic breast changes can cause tenderness, fullness, or a painful lump in the breast.
  • Mastitis or another infection may cause pain with redness, warmth, swelling, or fever.
  • A blow, exercise-related strain, or inflammation of the chest wall can feel like breast pain, including sharp pain under the left breast.
  • A poorly fitting or unsupportive bra may worsen breast movement-related discomfort.
  • Some medicines and hormonal treatments can contribute to breast tenderness or nipple pain.
  • Pain from the ribs, muscles, or nerves can be felt in or under the breast, sometimes causing discomfort in the breast bone area.

How Breast Pain Relates to Cancer

Does breast cancer hurt? Cancer is not the most common cause of breast pain, and pain alone usually cannot identify its cause. However, persistent, one-sided, localized pain should be assessed, especially if it occurs with a new lump, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, nipple discharge, or a change in breast shape. A painful lump in the breast or sore breasts with lumps should also be evaluated rather than self-diagnosed.

Relief Tips

How to Relieve Breast Pain

  • Wear a well-fitting support bra during the day and consider a support bra for breast pain during exercise.
  • Try a warm or cool compress and use whichever temperature feels more comfortable.
  • Avoid activities or clothing that clearly worsen the pain while the area settles.
  • Record the location, severity, triggers, menstrual timing, and associated changes.
  • Ask a clinician or pharmacist which over-the-counter pain reliever is safe for you before using it.

When to See a Doctor

When to See a Doctor About Breast Pain

  • Arrange a medical visit if breast pain persists, repeatedly returns, is limited to one area, or does not follow your usual cycle.
  • Seek prompt assessment for a new or growing lump, nipple discharge especially if bloody, nipple inversion, skin dimpling, redness, warmth, swelling, or a change in breast shape.
  • Contact a clinician sooner if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a personal or family history of breast cancer, or have recently had breast trauma or a procedure.
  • Use emergency services for sudden severe chest-area pain with shortness of breath, sweating, fainting, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder.

Complications

Possible Effects of Ongoing Breast Pain

Ongoing or severe breast pain can disrupt sleep, make exercise or work more difficult, and reduce comfort with touch or certain clothing. It may also cause anxiety about whether a serious condition is responsible. These effects do not necessarily mean the pain is dangerous, but persistent symptoms or pain that interferes with daily life deserve medical evaluation.
