Medical Treatment Options

Gynecology

For many gynecological conditions, medication is the first line of defense. Hormonal management is particularly effective because many issues, such as endometriosis and heavy bleeding, are driven by the body’s natural cycle.

Common Medications:

  • Hormonal Birth Control: Pills, patches, and vaginal rings are not just for preventing pregnancy. They are often prescribed to regulate irregular cycles, reduce heavy bleeding, and manage the pain of endometriosis.
  • Intrauterine Devices (IUDs): Hormonal IUDs are inserted into the uterus to provide long-term birth control and significantly lighten heavy periods.
  • Antibiotics and Antifungals: These are used to cure infections like bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
  • Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT): For women going through menopause, HRT (estrogen and progesterone) helps relieve hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness.
  • NSAIDs: Prescription-strength anti-inflammatory drugs help manage severe menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea).

Minimally Invasive Procedures

Gynecology

If medication does not provide relief, minimally invasive procedures can often fix the problem without the need for major open surgery. These are often performed as “day surgeries” at LIV Hospital.

Hysteroscopy

This procedure involves no incisions. A thin camera is inserted through the cervix into the uterus.

  • Use: To remove uterine polyps, small fibroids, or scar tissue that causes infertility.
  • Recovery: Most patients go home the same day and return to work within 24 hours.

Endometrial Ablation

For women who suffer from extremely heavy periods but do not want a hysterectomy, ablation is an option.

  • Procedure: We use heat, cold, or radiofrequency energy to destroy the lining of the uterus.
  • Result: This significantly reduces or completely stops menstrual bleeding.

Laparoscopic Surgery (Keyhole Surgery)

Instead of a large cut on the belly, the surgeon makes 2-3 tiny incisions (less than a centimeter). A camera and thin instruments are used to operate.

  • Use: To treat endometriosis, remove ovarian cysts, or perform tubal ligation.
  • Benefit: Less pain, less scarring, and faster recovery compared to traditional surgery.

Surgical Treatments for Gynecologic Conditions

When conditions are severe or involve large tumors, surgery may be the best path to health. LIV Hospital specializes in advanced surgical care.

Myomectomy (Fibroid Removal)

This is the surgical removal of uterine fibroids while leaving the uterus intact.

  • Who it is for: Women with painful fibroids who still want to have children in the future.

Hysterectomy (Removal of the Uterus)

This is the definitive cure for fibroids, adenomyosis, and uterine cancer.

  • Types: It can be partial (leaving the cervix) or total. Depending on the reason for surgery, the ovaries may be kept to prevent early menopause.
  • Method: At LIV Hospital, we strive to perform this vaginally or laparoscopically whenever possible to avoid large abdominal scars.

Oophorectomy

This is the removal of one or both ovaries. It is performed for ovarian cancer, severe cysts, or to reduce cancer risk in women with BRCA gene mutations.

Why Choose LIV Hospital for Gynecology?

Choosing where to have your treatment is a big decision. LIV Hospital offers a unique combination of comfort and clinical excellence.

Our Advantages:

  • Robotic Surgery Center: We utilize the Da Vinci Robotic System for complex hysterectomies and endometriosis excision. The robot gives the surgeon 3D vision and precision that human hands cannot match, resulting in less pain and faster healing for you.
  • Fertility Preservation: Our gynecologic surgeons work closely with fertility specialists. If you need surgery but want to have kids, we plan your procedure to protect your reproductive potential.
  • Multidisciplinary Care: For complex cases like cancer, your team includes gynecologists, oncologists, and radiologists working together.

Rehabilitation and Recovery

Recovery is a process, not a single event. We provide detailed “Return to Life” plans for all surgical patients.

Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation

After childbirth or surgery, the muscles of the pelvic floor can become weak or tight.

  • Therapy: Specialized physical therapy helps treat urinary incontinence and pelvic pain. It strengthens the muscles that support the bladder and uterus.

Post-Surgical Timelines:

  • Minor Procedures (Hysteroscopy/D&C): Recovery takes 1 to 2 days. Mild cramping is normal.
  • Laparoscopic Surgery: Recovery takes 1 to 2 weeks. You may feel bloated due to the gas used during surgery.
  • Major Abdominal Surgery: Recovery takes 4 to 6 weeks. You will need to avoid heavy lifting and driving until cleared by your doctor.

Long-term Management and Follow-up

Many gynecological conditions require ongoing monitoring even after treatment.

Follow-Up Protocols:

  • Endometriosis: Since there is no permanent cure, we schedule regular check-ins to monitor for returning pain or cysts.
  • Cancer Surveillance: Patients treated for reproductive cancers require regular exams, blood tests (like CA-125), and imaging for several years to ensure they remain cancer-free.
  • Routine Screening: Even after menopause or surgery, you may still need pelvic exams or breast screenings, depending on your history.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are the treatment options for endometriosis?

Treatment usually starts with pain medication and hormonal birth control to suppress the menstrual cycle. If that fails, laparoscopic surgery is used to remove the endometrial tissue. In severe cases where fertility is not a concern, a hysterectomy may be considered.

It depends on the method. For a vaginal or laparoscopic hysterectomy, recovery takes about 2 to 4 weeks. For an abdominal hysterectomy (large incision), full recovery can take 6 to 8 weeks. You will need to avoid lifting heavy objects during this time.

Not always. Many women manage fibroids with medication to control bleeding. Procedures like Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) can shrink fibroids without surgery. Surgery (myomectomy or hysterectomy) is usually reserved for fibroids that are very large or cause severe pain and bleeding.

The most common treatment is Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), which can be pills, patches, or creams containing estrogen and progesterone. Non-hormonal medications, such as certain antidepressants, are also effective for treating hot flashes in women who cannot take hormones.

You can expect to feel tired and have some soreness around the small incisions. A common side effect is shoulder pain, which is caused by the gas used to inflate the abdomen during surgery irritating the diaphragm. This usually goes away within 24 to 48 hours.
