Treatment and Procedures
The day of the surgery is usually a straightforward experience for the patient. You will arrive at the clinic and be prepared for the procedure in a comfortable setting. The surgical team will reconfirm your identity and the specific details of your treatment plan. Because the surgery is performed while you are awake, you may be offered a mild sedative to help you stay relaxed. The entire process is designed to be efficient, with the goal of getting you back to the comfort of your home quickly.
Preparation steps on surgery day:

Numbing drops are the first step in the actual surgical process. These are highly effective local anesthetic drops that are applied directly to the surface of the eye. They ensure that you do not feel any pain during the procedure. You may still feel a sensation of pressure or movement, but the sharp sensations of surgery are completely blocked.
The surgeon will also use a small device to gently keep your eyelids open, preventing you from blinking during the critical moments of the laser application.
The creation of the corneal flap is the first major stage of the surgery. In this specific method, the femtosecond laser is used. You will be asked to look at a small light. The laser then focuses ultra fast pulses into the middle layer of the cornea. These pulses create microscopic bubbles that gently separate the tissue at a very precise depth.
This process takes only about twenty to thirty seconds per eye. Because it is computer controlled, the flap is incredibly uniform and tailored to your eye’s dimensions.
After the flap is created, there is a brief transition. The surgeon gently lifts the thin flap to reveal the underlying corneal tissue, which is called the stroma. You might notice that your vision becomes quite blurry at this stage, which is completely normal. The flap remains attached by a small hinge, which ensures it can be perfectly repositioned later. This stage is handled with extreme care to maintain the integrity of the delicate eye tissues.
Important aspects of the flap phase:
The second laser used is called an excimer laser. This is a cool, ultraviolet laser that is used to reshape the corneal stroma. The laser follows the customized map created during your diagnostic tests. It works by breaking molecular bonds in the tissue, allowing the surgeon to remove microscopic amounts of material without any heat damage. This is the part of the surgery that actually corrects your vision by changing how the eye refracts light.
Sophisticated eye tracking technology is active during the excimer laser phase. Even though you are asked to look at a target light, your eye will naturally make tiny, involuntary movements. The tracking system monitors your eye thousands of times per second and adjusts the laser position instantly to match. If your eye moves too far, the laser will automatically stop until your eye is back in the correct position. This ensures the treatment is perfectly centered and safe.
The tracking system prevents:

Once the reshaping is complete, the surgeon gently folds the corneal flap back into its original position. A remarkable feature of the eye is that this flap begins to adhere naturally within minutes without the need for stitches.
The surgeon will carefully smooth out any bubbles or wrinkles to ensure the flap is perfectly aligned. This natural suction and the eye’s incredible healing ability allow the flap to stay in place securely as the healing process begins.
The global cost of this advanced procedure reflects the high level of technology involved. Generally, you can expect the cost to range between fifteen hundred and three thousand dollars per eye in most major medical centers.
This range usually covers the surgeon’s fees, the use of both specialized lasers, the preoperative diagnostic tests, and a certain period of postoperative follow up care. Investing in this technology provides a level of precision that traditional methods cannot match.
Immediately after the flap is replaced, the surgeon will perform a quick check to ensure everything is perfect. You will then be moved to a recovery area for a short period of rest. Most patients find that their vision is already noticeably different, though it may feel like you are looking through a light fog or underwater. You will be given protective eyewear to prevent you from touching or rubbing your eyes as the flap settles into place.
Immediate recovery guidelines:
The entire surgical experience is often described as being much faster than expected. While the lasers are highly complex, the patient’s role is simply to remain still and focus on a light for a few minutes. The lack of a mechanical blade reduces the physical stress on the eye and typically results in a very calm environment in the operating room. This combination of speed, precision, and technology is why this specific method has become a gold standard in vision correction.

No, the surgery is performed with local numbing drops; you will be awake but relaxed and comfortable throughout the process.
A small medical device called a speculum gently keeps your lids open, so it is impossible for you to blink and interfere with the laser.
You will see a blinking light to focus on, and you may see some patterns of light, but you will not see the actual laser beam.
You may notice a slight odor during the excimer laser phase; this is caused by the laser breaking molecular bonds and is perfectly normal.
No, your vision will be blurry and you may be tired from the sedative, so you must have a friend or family member drive you home.
