Follow-up And Support

Pathology Results Review

One of the first and most important steps in follow up is reviewing the pathology report. The tissue removed during Robotic Prostate Surgery or Robotic Kidney Surgery is examined under a microscope by a pathologist. They determine the final stage and grade of the cancer. They also check the surgical margins to ensure all cancer cells were removed. The urologist explains these findings to the patient, usually within a week of surgery, to determine if any further treatment, like radiation or observation, is needed.

Catheter Removal Appointment

Robotic Urology

For patients with a urinary catheter, the removal appointment is a significant milestone. This typically happens 7 to 14 days after surgery. The bladder is filled with fluid to test the watertight seal of the surgical connection.

If healed, the balloon is deflated, and the catheter slides out easily. This is generally a quick and painless procedure. After removal, the focus shifts to bladder retraining and continence.

Recovering Urinary Control

Regaining bladder control is a gradual process after Robotic Prostate Surgery or Robotic Bladder Surgery. The muscles must learn to hold urine without the prostate’s support. Most men experience some leakage initially and wear safety pads.

The care team reinforces the importance of pelvic floor exercises (Kegels). Improvement continues over weeks to months. The vast majority of patients regain excellent control, thanks to the precision of the robotic technique that preserves the sphincter muscles.

Sexual Function Rehabilitation

Recovery of sexual function depends on age, pre operative function, and whether nerves were spared during Robotic Prostate Surgery. Nerves can be “stunned” by surgery and take time to recover, often 12 to 24 months. Penile rehabilitation protocols are often started early. This may involve low dose daily medications or vacuum erection devices to promote blood flow and tissue health. Open communication with the urologist helps manage expectations and explore supportive therapies.

Cancer Surveillance Schedule

Cancer survivors require lifelong monitoring. For prostate cancer, this involves a PSA blood test every 3 to 6 months initially. The PSA should remain undetectable if the prostate was fully removed. For Robotic Kidney Surgery, surveillance involves periodic CT scans or ultrasounds to check the remaining kidney and ensure no recurrence. Robotic Bladder Surgery patients undergo regular scans and blood work. This structured surveillance provides safety and peace of mind.

Functional Recovery For Kidney Patients

After Robotic Kidney Surgery, specifically partial nephrectomy, monitoring kidney function is key. Blood tests for creatinine levels check how well the kidneys are filtering waste. Patients are advised to avoid medications that can harm the kidneys, such as NSAIDs (ibuprofen), and to stay well hydrated. Maintaining normal blood pressure is crucial to protect the remaining kidney tissue from long term damage.

Lifestyle And Diet

Adopting a healthy lifestyle supports recovery and reduces cancer recurrence risks. A diet rich in plant based foods, low in animal fats, and high in antioxidants is recommended. Maintaining a healthy weight reduces stress on the pelvic floor and lowers surgical hernia risks. For bladder cancer patients, smoking cessation is the single most important lifestyle change to prevent cancer from returning. Exercise is encouraged once the 6 week lifting restriction is lifted.

Signs Of Complications

Patients are educated on long term warning signs. While rare, issues like lymphoceles (fluid collections), hernias at port sites, or scar tissue narrowing the urine flow (strictures) can occur. Symptoms like new swelling in the legs, difficulty urinating, or a bulge in the abdomen should be reported. Prompt evaluation by the urology team ensures these issues are managed effectively, often with simple outpatient procedures.

Mental Health And Emotional Support

Recovering from major surgery and a cancer diagnosis affects mental health. Anxiety about PSA results or frustration with temporary incontinence is normal. Support is an integral part of the care plan. Liv Hospital can connect patients with support groups where they can talk to other men and women who have walked the same path. Professional counseling is also available to help process the emotional journey of survivorship.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How often do I need to see the doctor after recovery?

Typically, follow-up visits are scheduled every 3 to 6 months for the first two years, then annually, depending on your cancer status.

Most patients regain full control within a few months, although the timeline varies; performing Kegel exercises significantly speeds up this process.

You can usually resume activity after about 4 to 6 weeks once the internal healing is complete, though function may take longer to return.

The risk depends on the final pathology report, but robotic surgery is highly effective at removing localized cancer with clear margins.

We offer end-to-end support, including language interpretation, travel coordination, and virtual follow-ups, making world-class care accessible and stress-free.
