OVERVIEW
What Is Neurology?
Neurology is the branch of medicine focused on disorders of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves, including conditions such as epilepsy, migraine, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis. It covers both the diagnosis of neurological symptoms and the long-term management of chronic neurological conditions.
Some neurological conditions are caused directly by viral infections, such as viral meningitis or encephalitis, or develop as a complication of one, as seen when the shingles virus affects a nerve and causes lasting nerve pain. Patients are commonly referred to this branch for symptoms such as recurring headaches, seizures, numbness or weakness, memory changes, or problems with balance and coordination.
Diagnosis often involves a detailed neurological examination along with imaging, such as an MRI, or tests that measure the electrical activity of the brain or nerves. Because the nervous system affects so many functions, treatment approaches vary widely, from medication that controls symptoms to long-term rehabilitation aimed at maintaining or restoring function.
