OVERVIEW
What Is Orthopedics and Traumatology?
Orthopedics and Traumatology is the branch of medicine focused on the bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, and tendons. It covers both chronic musculoskeletal conditions, such as arthritis and osteoporosis, and acute injuries, such as fractures, dislocations, and sports-related injuries.
Patients are commonly referred to this branch for joint pain, limited mobility, a suspected fracture, or an injury sustained during physical activity or an accident. Treatment ranges from non-surgical options, such as physical therapy, bracing, and medication, to surgical procedures like joint replacement, fracture repair, and ligament reconstruction.
Diagnosis typically relies on a physical examination combined with imaging, such as an X-ray or MRI, to assess the extent of an injury or the progression of a degenerative condition like arthritis. Recovery time varies considerably, from a few weeks for a minor sprain to several months of rehabilitation following major joint surgery.
