Pediatrics

Pediatrics is the branch of medicine focused on the health of infants, children, and adolescents, covering everything from routine growth and development checkups to the diagnosis and treatment of childhood illnesses. Rather than focusing on a single organ system, this branch takes a broad view of a child’s overall health at each stage of development.

Viral illnesses make up a large part of childhood healthcare, including common infections like the flu and RSV, as well as illnesses such as chickenpox and hand-foot-mouth disease that are more common in early childhood. Vaccination against many of these viruses is a routine and central part of pediatric care.

Regular well-child visits play a central role in this branch, tracking a child’s growth, development, and vaccination schedule over time, which also makes it easier to catch potential concerns early. Because children cannot always describe their symptoms clearly, especially at a young age, diagnosis often relies as much on a parent’s observations as on the physical exam itself.
