Diseases Treated at Liv Hospital Diabetes Clinic

At Liv Hospital Diabetes Clinic, with a multidisciplinary approach, expert healthcare professionals contribute to improving the health quality of patients with comprehensive treatment.

Diabetes Mellitus (Type 1 Diabetes, Type 2 Diabetes, Gestational Diabetes): The most common types of diabetes, also known as diabetes, are type 1 diabetes (childhood type), type 2 (adult type) diabetes and gestational diabetes. In our hospital, diabetic patients are examined and treated by a team consisting of an experienced endocrinologist, internal medicine specialist, dietitian and diabetes nurse; long-term follow-up is done; Diabetes education is provided to patients and their relatives. In addition, services are provided for the early diagnosis of people at risk of developing diabetes in the future and the prevention of the disease. Technological treatment and monitoring systems such as insulin pump and continuous blood glucose monitoring are also applied.

Obesity: Obesity is an important disease that is becoming increasingly common in our country as well as all over the world. It paves the way for many diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, deterioration in blood fats, joint problems and cancer. The common cause of obesity is that a person consumes too many calories but does not spend enough calories. However, it must first be investigated and established that there is no hormonal or metabolic disease underlying the weight gain. Because many endocrine diseases manifest themselves with weight gain.

Insulin Resistance Conditions (Metabolic Syndrome and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome): Insulin resistance is a condition that underlies many diseases, especially diabetes mellitus, and is usually genetically transmitted. Metabolic syndrome is a condition defined as the coexistence of two or more of the following: disorders in blood sugar and insulin metabolism, overweight, hypertension, disorders in blood lipids, high uric acid, and polycystic ovary syndrome. If it is not diagnosed and the necessary precautions are not taken and treated, it accelerates the emergence of heart, brain, kidney and leg vascular diseases over time.

Weakness (Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia): If the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases, which are of psychological origin and are mostly seen in young women, are not diagnosed and treated in a timely manner, disease types may occur due to disruption of the working order of the hormone centers in the brain. Thyroid diseases are one of the most common health problems in society. The thyroid gland determines the body’s working speed with the thyroid hormone it secretes, and if there is an increase (hyperthyroidism-toxic goiter) or decrease (hypothyroidism-underactivity) in hormone secretion, all organs and systems in the body are negatively affected. Therefore, early diagnosis and treatment are of great importance. This situation becomes much more important, especially during the preparation period before pregnancy and during pregnancy, as it can affect both the mother and the baby and have negative consequences. One of the most common diseases of the thyroid gland is goiter with or without nodules. It is imperative that thyroid nodules are examined and monitored meticulously, especially nodules with a risk of cancer development are distinguished and treated, including surgery when necessary. Because almost all thyroid cancers can be completely eliminated with timely diagnosis and treatment. Like all other organs, the thyroid gland also has inflammatory diseases.

Parathyroid Diseases: Parathyroid glands are glands located in the neck, behind the thyroid gland, and regulate calcium metabolism. Underactive (hypoparathyroidism) or overactive (hyperparathyroidism) parathyroid glands are the main parathyroid diseases. If left untreated, it can lead to many metabolic complications, especially osteoporosis and fractures.

Pituitary Diseases: The pituitary gland is an organ located at the base of the brain and functions as the management center of all major hormone systems in the body. Insufficient function of the pituitary gland (hypopituitarism), tumors (prolactinoma, acromegaly, Cushing’s disease, nonfunctional tumors, etc.) and hypophysitis are the main pituitary diseases. Pituitary diseases are monitored and treated by the endocrinology department. When necessary, we work in collaboration with branches such as neurosurgery and radiation oncology.

Adrenal Gland: Adrenal glands are located above both kidneys. Insufficient functioning of the adrenal gland (adrenal gland insufficiency), overfunctioning or tumors (nonfunctional tumors, Cushing’s syndrome, pheochromocytoma, primary hyperaldosteronism, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, adrenal gland cancers, etc.) are the main adrenal gland diseases.

Hirsutism (Excessive Hair Growth): Hirsutism (excessive hair growth) is a common condition. While it may be structural or racial, in many cases it may also develop due to underlying hormonal reasons. Therefore, epilation etc. Efforts to eliminate it by other methods fail in these people. The correct method is to first investigate by an endocrinologist whether there is an underlying hormonal disease that may cause hair growth; If it is detected, it is treated; if it is not detected, the appropriate method for hair removal (epilation, medication, etc.) is used. The most common diseases that may cause hair growth are polycystic ovary syndrome, hyperprolactinemia, congenital adrenal hyperplasia and Cushing’s syndrome.

Testicular and Ovary Diseases: Infertility caused by the disorder of sex hormones in men and women, decreased libido (sexual reluctance), erectile dysfunction in men, increased hair growth in women may be due to the disease of the testicles and ovaries themselves or as a result of other hormonal diseases. may occur, it should be examined by endocrinology and appropriate treatment should be arranged.
Osteoporosis and Other Metabolic Bone Diseases: Osteoporosis is a bone metabolism disease. Although the most common form is postmenopausal osteoporosis, making a differential diagnosis of osteoporosis due to other causes is important for the patient to receive the correct treatment. Paget, osteogenesis imperfecta etc. along with osteoporosis. Metabolic bone diseases such as bone diseases are also in the field of interest of endocrinology.

Lipid (Blood Fats) Metabolism Diseases: It is customary to treat lipid metabolism disorders and rare metabolic diseases, known as high cholesterol, in cardiology and internal medicine clinics. Since high cholesterol causes cardiovascular diseases, this practice generally provides adequate treatment of the patient. However, the treatment of a group of rare lipid metabolism diseases is more complex and these diseases are monitored by an endocrinologist. Similarly rare are Gaucher, Nieman Pick, Fabry etc. Treatment of metabolic diseases is also the field of endocrinology and metabolic diseases specialists.
