Immunology and Allergy

Immunology and Allergy is the branch of medicine focused on the immune system and the conditions that arise when it reacts too strongly, too weakly, or against the body’s own tissues. It covers allergic conditions such as hay fever, food allergies, and asthma, as well as immune deficiencies and autoimmune disorders.

Patients are commonly referred to this branch for recurring or severe allergic reactions, frequent infections that may point to a weakened immune system, or symptoms suggesting an autoimmune condition, where the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue. Allergy testing, such as skin prick tests or blood tests, is often used to identify specific triggers.

Treatment in this branch ranges from avoiding known triggers and using medication to control symptoms, to longer-term approaches such as allergy immunotherapy, which gradually reduces sensitivity to a specific allergen over time. Because immune-related conditions can affect multiple organ systems at once, care is often coordinated with other specialties depending on which part of the body is involved.
