Diabetes Treatment at Liv Hospital
Diabetes patients have to be monitored to maintain blood sugar at a good level. This is especially important for people with diabetes using insulin. Many patients puncture their fingertip once or several times a day with a glucose meter. Thanks to the systems developed in recent years, continuous sugar measurement can be provided by a sensor placed on the skin. This provides insight into the fluctuations in blood sugar for 24 hours, allowing nutrition and diabetes treatment to be tailored to these measurements. This system is similar to monitoring blood pressure with a Holter device instead of taking blood pressure measurements several times a day.
The blood glucose monitoring systems used at Liv Hospital have different features. In one of the systems, blood glucose can be monitored for 14 days without the need for a finger-stick measurement, thanks to the attached device. In the other system, the recording is for 6 days. Fingertip testing is required 2-3 times a day. The advantage of this system is that it can send follow-up information to the patient’s doctor or relatives via remote access. In addition, the device warns with an alarm if the blood glucose drops too low. For these reasons, this is the method we prefer for our inpatients.
Blood glucose monitoring systems are particularly recommended for diabetics:
- If they take insulin and need better control of their glucose levels
- Sugar must be monitored, but only if the patient is uncomfortable with finger sticking
- If pregnant
- If the patient does not feel that their glucose is getting too low
- If better monitoring of the relationship between exercise, diet and blood glucose changes is desired
- If there is a need for remote monitoring by the diabetic’s relatives (e.g. children, home care patients).
