Overview and Purpose

What is Chin Aesthetic?

A Chin Aesthetic procedure, or mentoplasty, is a surgical or non-surgical intervention designed to reshape the chin by enhancing its size, reducing its projection, or refining its contour. The chin is the biological anchor of the lower face; its position relative to the nose and neck determines the “strength” and harmony of a person’s profile.

The Purpose of Chin Reshaping

Many patients ask, “What is chin reshaping?” It is the art and science of aligning the chin with the rest of the facial features to create a more proportional appearance. At Liv Hospital, our purpose is to provide structural balance. Whether you are looking for chin up aesthetics to correct a “receding” chin or seeking to sharpen your jawline for a more athletic look, we utilize high-precision medical technology to ensure your results are symmetrical and naturally integrated into your skeletal frame.

Common Procedures

Advanced Chin Contouring Techniques

At Liv Hospital, we offer three primary biological and structural methods for Chin Aesthetic enhancement:

  • Chin Implants: Biocompatible silicone or porous implants are placed through a tiny incision under the chin or inside the mouth. These provide permanent projection and width.
  • Sliding Genioplasty: A surgical technique where the chin bone itself is cut and “slid” forward or backward. This is a 100% biological solution that also helps with functional airway issues.
  • Jawline Contouring: Enhancing the entire lower border of the mandible to create a “chiseled” effect that transitions smoothly into the chin up aesthetics.
  • Non-Surgical Fillers: Using high-density hyaluronic acid to “liquid-sculpt” the chin with zero downtime, ideal for those testing the look of a new profile.

Consultation and Preparation

The Clinical Evaluation

A successful Chin Aesthetic journey begins with a 3D cephalometric analysis. At Liv Hospital, our surgeons use high-resolution imaging to measure the “Ricketts’ E-line”—the biological line connecting the tip of the nose to the chin. This helps us determine the exact millimeters of projection needed to achieve perfect chin up aesthetics without making the face look “over-projected.”

Preparing for Your Procedure

  • Imaging: We perform dental X-rays or CT scans to check the roots of your lower teeth before any bone-involved jawline surgery.
  • Nicotine Cessation: You must stop smoking 4 weeks prior to surgery. Nicotine restricts blood flow, which is critical for the healing of internal incisions.
  • Medication Review: Avoid aspirin and herbal supplements for 2 weeks to minimize bruising.
  • Oral Hygiene: Since many incisions are made inside the mouth, ensuring your gums are healthy is a vital biological precaution.

Surgery and Recovery

The Surgical Experience

Chin Aesthetic surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. If using an implant, the surgeon creates a precise pocket directly over the bone. At Liv Hospital, we use “hidden” internal sutures to ensure no external scars are visible. For bone-sliding procedures, tiny titanium plates are used to secure the bone in its new biological position.

The Recovery Timeline

  • The First 48 Hours: Expect mild swelling and a “tight” sensation. You will wear a compression strap to support the jawline.
  • Week 1: Most patients return to light work. You will follow a soft-food diet to avoid stressing the internal incisions.
  • Weeks 2–4: The majority of swelling subsides, revealing the new profile. You may feel temporary numbness in the lower lip as the nerves recover.
  • Month 2: The tissues have fully settled. You can resume full physical activity and enjoy the final result of your chin reshaping.

Maintenance and Results

Ensuring Long-Term Success

The results of surgical Chin Aesthetic procedures are permanent, but your face will continue to age naturally.

  • Skin Elasticity: Maintain a high-quality skincare routine to keep the skin over your new jawline firm and youthful.
  • UV Protection: Sun damage thins the skin; daily SPF protects the biological integrity of the tissues covering an implant.
  • Stable Weight: For those who had non-surgical chin up aesthetics, maintaining a stable weight ensures your fillers look their best until your next top-up.
  • Routine Follow-ups: Periodic check-ups at Liv Hospital allow us to monitor the placement and health of the tissues over time.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between mentoplasty and genioplasty?

The terms are often used interchangeably to refer to chin surgery. However, in medical terms, genioplasty typically refers to the surgical alteration of the chin bone (osteotomy). At the same time, mentoplasty is a broader term that can encompass both bone surgery and the use of implants to augment the chin.

A severely recessed chin can indicate a smaller airway, a risk factor for obstructive sleep apnea. While the appearance itself is not a health risk, the underlying skeletal structure can impact breathing and dental occlusion.

Yes, surgical procedures involving bone movement (such as sliding genioplasty) or permanent implants are intended to be lifelong solutions. The bone heals in the new position, and implants are made of durable materials. However, the soft tissues will continue to age naturally.

Dermal fillers can provide a temporary improvement for mild to moderate chin recession. This is known as a liquid genioplasty. It is a good option for testing the look, but it is not permanent and cannot achieve the same magnitude of projection or vertical change as surgery.

This texture, often called “peau d’orange,” is caused by the hyperactive contraction of the mentalis muscle. It usually happens when the chin is weak or vertically long, forcing the muscle to strain to close the lips. Surgery can generally relieve this strain.
