What is Stem Cell Therapy in Eye Diseases?

Stem cell damage occurs in genetic diseases that cause stem cell deficiency in the corneal layer (transparent layer) of the eye, due to improper contact lens use, radiotherapy, immunosuppressive treatments, various immunological eye diseases, chemical burns, some eye infections and serious eye allergies. Both stem cells obtained from healthy eyes (Limbal stem cells) and biopsy material obtained from the patient’s oral mucosa and tissue engineering products obtained using amnionic chorion membrane have been tried in many patients in recent years and have been successful. In addition, autologous or allogeneic mesenchymal stem cell implantation is a method to be used in the treatment of these diseases.

What is Stem Cell Therapy in Retinal Diseases?

In recent years, stem cell trial treatments can be performed in suitable patients with the approval of the Stem Cell Advisory Board within the Ministry of Health for problems related to the retina, especially Retinitis pigmentosum and diabetic retinopathy.
