The Final Step to Healing

Surgery is a controlled trauma; recovery is the body’s miraculous response to repair that trauma. Whether you have just undergone a complex Head and Neck Cancer resection, a delicate Cochlear Implant surgery, or a life-changing Functional Rhinoplasty, the days and weeks following your procedure are critical. In fact, we often tell our patients that 50% of the surgical success depends on the operating room, and the other 50% depends on adherence to post-operative care.

At Liv Hospital, we do not simply discharge you with a prescription and a wave. We provide a comprehensive “Recovery Roadmap” tailored to your specific procedure. For our international patients, this includes everything from hotel-based nursing visits to digital follow-ups once you return home. Our goal is to make your ENT surgery recovery as smooth, pain-free, and predictable as possible.

General Principles of Head & Neck Recovery

While every surgery is unique, the head and neck region follows specific rules of healing due to its rich blood supply and proximity to the airway.

Elevation is Key: Gravity is your best friend. For the first 1–2 weeks, you must sleep with your head elevated on 2–3 pillows (or in a recliner). This reduces swelling significantly. Lying flat causes blood to pool in the head, increasing throbbing pain and bruising.
Avoid Raising Blood Pressure: Any activity that flushes your face—bending over to tie shoes, straining on the toilet, heavy lifting (>10lbs), or hot showers—can cause a fragile blood vessel to burst (hematoma).
Humidity Matters: The nose and throat love moisture. We recommend using a cool-mist humidifier in your bedroom to prevent crusting and keep the airway lining (mucosa) healthy.

Rhinoplasty and Sinus Surgery Recovery

The nose is the most visible part of the face, and recovery here is a balance of aesthetics and function.

The First Week: "The Congested Phase"

Nasal Packing: In the past, surgeons packed yards of gauze into the nose, which was painful to remove.
Bruising: If we performed osteotomies (bone breaking), you may have “raccoon eyes” (bruising) for 7–10 days. Using Arnica Montana gel and ice packs (20 mins on, 20 mins off) for the first 48 hours helps dramatically.
Cleaning: You must become an expert at Nasal Irrigation.

Long-Term Healing

Swelling: The tip of the nose retains fluid the longest. While you will look “normal” to strangers in 2 weeks, the final definition of the tip can take 12–18 months to appear.
Numbness: The tip of your nose and upper lip may feel stiff or numb for several months. This is normal nerve regeneration.

Tonsillectomy and Throat Surgery Recovery

Throat surgery is notorious for being painful in adults, but modern techniques like Coblation have improved the experience.

The “Rollercoaster” of Pain

Recovery often follows a “U-shape.”

Days 1–3: Pain is manageable due to long-acting anesthesia.
Days 4–8: Pain often increases as the white scabs (eschar) form and tighten in the throat. This is also the highest risk period for bleeding.
Day 10+: The scabs fall off, and pain drops rapidly.

The Diet Rules

Hydration is Non-Negotiable: Swallowing hurts, so patients stop drinking. Dehydration increases pain. You must sip ice water, Gatorade, or apple juice constantly.
Soft & Cold: Stick to yogurt, pudding, ice cream, scrambled eggs, and mashed potatoes. Avoid anything sharp (chips, toast), hot (spicy or temperature), or acidic (orange juice/tomato sauce) for 14 days.

Ear Surgery Recovery (Tympanoplasty/Mastoidectomy)

The ear is sensitive to pressure and water.

Protecting the Ear

Water Precautions: You must keep the ear absolutely dry. When showering, place a cotton ball soaked in Vaseline (petroleum jelly) into the outer ear to create a waterproof seal. Do not swim until your doctor clears you (usually 4–6 weeks).
Pressure Changes: Do not pop your ears. If you need to sneeze, do it with your mouth open to vent the pressure. Blowing your nose or popping your ears can blow out the new eardrum graft.

Vertigo Management

It is normal to feel slightly off-balance or dizzy for a few days after ear surgery. Move slowly when standing up. If the room spins violently, call us immediately.
Tinnitus: Ringing or popping sounds are normal as the packing inside the ear dissolves.

Cochlear Implant Activation

Surgery is just the “hardware installation.” The “software activation” happens later.

The Waiting Game: You will leave the hospital with the internal device but no external processor. You cannot hear yet. The incision behind the ear needs 3–4 weeks to heal fully.
Switch-On Day: You return to our Audiology center. The audiologist places the external magnet and processor on your head and slowly turns up the volume.
What You Hear: At first, voices may sound like “Mickey Mouse” or robots. This is normal. Your brain needs time (months) to learn the new electrical language. We provide auditory training exercises to speed this up.

Head and Neck / Thyroid Surgery Recovery

For neck incisions, our focus is on wound care and scar minimization.

Drain Care

You may go home (or to your hotel) with a small plastic bulb drain (Jackson-Pratt) attached to your neck.

Purpose: It collects fluid (seroma) and blood to prevent swelling under the skin.
Care: We will teach you how to “strip” the tube (squeeze it to keep it flowing) and measure the output. We usually remove it when output is less than 30ml/day (typically Day 2 or 3).

Scar Management

Once the stitches/staples are removed (Day 7–10):

Sun Protection: The sun will turn a new scar dark brown (hyperpigmentation). You must keep the scar covered or use SPF 50+ for a full year.
Massage: Gently massaging the scar with silicone gel or Vitamin E oil breaks up scar tissue and keeps it flat and soft.

Voice Rest

After vocal cord surgery (Microlaryngoscopy), strict voice rest is often required.

Absolute Silence: No talking, no whispering (whispering strains the cords more than talking!), and no throat clearing for 3–7 days. Bring a notepad or use a “Text-to-Speech” app on your phone.

How do I clean my ears safely?

You should never put cotton swabs in the ear canal, as this pushes the wax deeper; instead, use a washcloth to clean the outer ear, or use over-the-counter softening drops to let the wax drain naturally.

Can I fly after ear surgery?

You typically need to wait several weeks before flying after ear surgery because pressure changes in the cabin can damage the repaired eardrum or displace hearing bones.

How long do ear tubes last?

Ear tubes usually stay in place for 6 to 18 months and then fall out on their own as the eardrum heals; the hole usually closes naturally afterward.

What should I eat if I can't taste anything?

Focus on the texture and temperature of food to make eating enjoyable; spicy or tart foods might still stimulate the nerves enough to provide some sensation if the loss isn’t total.

Is it normal to have a numb nose after rhinoplasty?

Yes, the tip of the nose often feels numb and stiff for several months after surgery due to the disruption of small nerves and swelling; sensation gradually returns over time.
