Linac – 4D Image Mediated Radiotherapy is a radiotherapy method in which Linear Accelerator (Linac) technology is used and the fourth dimension, time, is taken into consideration. This treatment involves a Linear Accelerator integrated with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI can track the movement of organs and tumors in real time, while the Linear Accelerator uses this information to precisely apply the radiotherapy dose.

Linacs, equipped with 3- and 4-dimensional image-mediated systems that enable patient positioning with millimetric accuracy, especially before and during treatment, constitute the current standard in the correct application of radiotherapy (Image-mediated Radiotherapy).

How Does LINAC Use?

• The coordinates of the tumor area detected by images taken from medical imaging devices (MR, CT, PET), surgical findings and clinical examination are determined. The ‘Treatment area’ is determined, including the tissues at risk of cancer around these cells. Normal tissues are also identified and defined in treatment planning systems.
• X-ray intensity and application direction are determined according to the location and size of the treatment area. The patient is placed in a fixed position, the same as in the simulator.
• It is important for patient positioning that the mobility of the treatment table is very precise and includes rotations.
• Since very high energy X-rays are used during the treatment, no one other than the patient is present in the relevant room.
• The rooms where the devices used in external radiotherapy are located are specially sheltered and armored rooms and are extremely secure. Its doors are thick, its walls are specially armored and made of licensed materials.
• The treatment is performed by radiotherapy technicians via the outside control console. There are cameras at different angles and monitors showing physical parameters to monitor the patient in the room where the console is located during the treatment.
• The suitability of the treatment area is checked before each treatment (image-mediated radiotherapy).
