The Importance of Precise Diagnosis

Precision planning is key to a life-changing smile. At LIV Hospital, we use advanced imaging to map your unique anatomy, ensuring absolute safety and implants that function perfectly for decades.

Initial Oral Health Screening

DENTISTRY

We begin by evaluating your overall oral health to ensure you are a candidate for All-on-6. This baseline exam covers gum health, remaining teeth, and bite alignment; any gum issues must be resolved prior to surgery.

  • Reviewing Your Medical History

General health directly impacts healing. We review your full medical history, including diabetes and smoking habits, to ensure your safety and the long-term success of your implants.

  • Blood Tests and Lab Work

We may request routine blood tests to confirm your fitness for anesthesia and healing. Monitoring factors like clotting and blood sugar ensures a safe surgery and successful recovery.

Advanced Diagnostic Imaging

DENTISTRY

Our 3D imaging builds a ‘surgical guide’ to map your procedure. This technology guarantees precise placement, avoiding sensitive anatomy and ensuring a perfect, lasting fit.

  • The Panoramic X-Ray

A panoramic X-ray captures your entire mouth in a single image. It provides a broad overview to spot cysts or bone loss, though we require 3D imaging for precise surgical planning.

  • Cone Beam CT (CBCT) Scan

This low-radiation scan generates a detailed 3D model of your anatomy. It allows us to analyze bone width and density, making it the most critical test for implant surgery.

  • Digital Intraoral Scanning

Digital scanners replace uncomfortable impressions with a precise 3D map. Merged with your bone scan, this allows us to plan your surgery and prosthesis together for optimal results.

What to Expect During a CBCT Scan

Non-invasive and tunnel-free, this quick scan rotates around you while you stand. It is completely painless and finishes in less than a minute.

Step-by-Step Scan Procedure

  1. Positioning: You will stand or sit in the machine. The technician will ask you to bite on a small plastic tab. This keeps your teeth apart slightly.
  2. Stabilization: We may place soft supports against your forehead and chin. This helps you keep your head perfectly still. Movement can blur the image.
  3. The Scan: The machine arm rotates 360 degrees around your head. It takes about 20 to 40 seconds. You just breathe normally and relax.
  4. Completion: The machine stops automatically. The technician will help you step out. The images appear on the computer almost instantly.

How to Prepare for Your Scan

Preparation is simple: no fasting is required. However, you must remove all metal objects, as they create image artifacts that can obscure critical details about your bone.

Clothing and Accessories Guidelines

  • Remove Jewelry: Take off earrings, necklaces, and nose rings.
  • Hair Accessories: Remove hairpins, clips, or barrettes that contain metal.
  • Eyewear: You will need to take off your glasses.
  • Hearing Aids: In some cases, these may need to be removed.
  • Dentures: If you wear removable dentures, you will take them out before the scan.

Pregnancy and Safety

If there is any chance you might be pregnant, tell us immediately. While the radiation dose is low, we avoid X-rays on pregnant women unless absolutely necessary.

We can often delay the scan until after the baby is born. If it is urgent, we use special lead aprons to protect you and the baby. Safety is always our top priority at LIV Hospital.

Understanding Your Test Results

After the scan, the dentist analyzes the data. We do not just look for “space” for the implant. We look for “quality.” We measure the height, width, and density of the bone.

You will likely review these images with your doctor on a screen. This is a great time to ask questions. Seeing your own 3D scan helps you understand why we recommend a specific treatment plan.

Checking Bone Density

Implants need solid ground to stand on. We measure bone density in “Hounsfield Units.” If the bone is too soft, the implant might not hold.

If your bone density is low, it does not mean you cannot have implants. It just means we might need to perform a bone graft first. Or, we might use longer implants to engage better bone. The scan tells us exactly what is needed.

Locating Nerves and Sinuses

The upper jaw has large air pockets called sinuses. The lower jaw has a large nerve running through it. We must avoid these areas to prevent complications.

The 3D scan shows exactly where your sinuses and nerves are. We can measure the distance in millimeters. This allows us to choose the perfect length for your implants. We can place them safely without touching these sensitive structures.

When Do You Need Advanced Imaging?

Not every dental procedure needs a 3D scan. A simple filling only needs a standard X-ray. However, for All-on-6 implants, advanced imaging is mandatory.

You need this testing whenever surgical placement is involved. It is also used if you have suffered trauma to the face. If you have had previous implants fail, we use these scans to find out why. It is the modern standard of care.

Post-Test Expectations and Timeline

One of the best things about digital diagnostics is speed. There is no waiting for film to develop. The images are ready instantly.

The analysis takes a little longer. Your dentist needs time to map out the surgery. Usually, we can discuss the preliminary plan during the same visit. For complex cases, we might study the scan for a day before finalizing the plan.

From Diagnosis to Surgery

Once the diagnosis is complete, we move to the planning phase. We will show you a digital simulation of your surgery. You will see where the implants go and what the final teeth will look like.

This thorough diagnosis ensures there are no surprises on surgery day. It makes the actual procedure faster and smoother. When we measure twice, we only cut once. This leads to faster healing and better results for you.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What tests are used to diagnose bone loss for implants?

Superior to standard 2D X-rays, our 3D CBCT scans precisely measure jawbone density for accurate bone grafting assessments.

No fasting or medication changes needed. Remove all metal from the head and neck area. Inform staff immediately if you are pregnant.

This non-invasive process is painless and takes under a minute. The machine rotates around your head without touching your face, requiring only a small plastic bite tab.

Our advanced digital imaging delivers extreme precision, minimizing risks and guaranteeing perfectly fitting implants.

Essential for implants (including All-on-6), 3D imaging captures critical details standard X-rays miss, such as impacted teeth and sinus structures.
