Hair Transplant Recovery

The grafts are in place, the hairline is designed, and the hard part is over. Now begins the most critical phase: Recovery.

At Liv Hospital, we tell our patients that a successful result is 50% surgery and 50% aftercare. The first 10 days are biologically crucial; the newly implanted follicles are like fresh seeds in the ground—they are fragile and have not yet taken root. A bump on the head, scratching an itch, or sleeping flat can dislodge a graft permanently.

Unlike “hair mills” that send you home with a generic brochure, Liv Hospital provides a medically supervised Recovery Program. From your first wash performed by our nurses to advanced wound-healing therapies like Hyperbaric Oxygen, we ensure your investment is protected every step of the way.

The "Fragile Phase" (Days 1–3)

The first 72 hours are when the grafts are most vulnerable. They are held in place only by a blood clot (fibrin).

Your Immediate Instructions:

  • The Bandage: You will leave the hospital with a bandage on the donor area (back of head). The recipient area (top) is open. Do not touch the recipient area.
  • Sleeping: You must sleep at a 45-degree angle. Use two pillows or a recliner.
  • Neck Pillow: Wear the provided travel pillow to prevent your head from rolling sideways and rubbing the new grafts against the bed.
  • Spraying: You will receive a bottle of Sterile Saline Spray.

Pain Management:

You may feel mild throbbing or burning in the donor area once the anesthesia wears off. This is normal.

  • Take the prescribed Paracetamol.
  • Apply ice packs to your forehead (not the grafts!) to reduce swelling.

The First Wash (Day 2 or 3)

We do not want you to wash your hair alone for the first time. You will return to Liv Hospital for the Clinical First Wash.

The Procedure:

  1. Lotion Application: The nurse applies a softening lotion (usually Bepanthol) to the recipient area. This sits for 45 minutes to soften the dried blood scabs.
  2. Rinsing: We use lukewarm, low-pressure water to gently rinse off the lotion.
  3. Shampooing: We foam the special medical shampoo in our hands and pat it onto the grafts. No rubbing.
  4. Drying: We use paper towels to blot the area dry. Towels are forbidden as the loops can snag a graft.

Note: After this session, you will perform this wash daily at your hotel/home for the next 7 days.

The "Scab Removal" (Day 10)

This is the milestone you are waiting for. By Day 10, the grafts are anchored (the root has connected to the blood supply). The scabs on top are now just dead skin and need to go.

The “Massage Wash”:

  • On Day 10, apply the lotion generously and let it sit for 1 hour.
  • In the shower, use your fingertips (not nails) to massage the recipient area in a circular motion.
  • Do not be afraid. The grafts are safe now. You must apply gentle pressure to rub the scabs off.
  • The Result: You will step out of the shower looking clean. The redness will remain, but the crusty look is gone. You can now wear a loose hat.

The "Ugly Duckling" Phase (Weeks 3–8)

This is the period that panics most patients. Just as you are enjoying your new look, the hair falls out.

What is Shock Loss?

  • The Cause: The trauma of relocation pushes the hair follicles into the “Telogen” (resting) phase. The hair shaft sheds, but the root remains alive under the skin.
  • The Timing: It starts around Week 3 and peaks at Month 2.
  • The Look: You may look exactly as you did before the surgery. In some cases, you may look worse because the surrounding native hair can also go into shock.
  • The Liv Guarantee: This is temporary. It is a biological reset button. Do not panic. Do not stop your medications. Trust the process.

Final Result.

The full density and thickness are revealed.

Month 18

Final Result (Crown).

The crown (vertex) has less blood flow, so it takes longer to grow.

Accelerating Recovery: Liv Hospital Therapies

We don’t just wait for nature; we help it. To speed up healing and reduce Shock Loss, we offer advanced adjunctive therapies.

1. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

Oxygen is fuel for healing.

  • The Therapy: You sit in a pressurized chamber breathing 100% pure oxygen.
  • The Benefit: It increases oxygen saturation in the scalp by 1000%. This reduces swelling, prevents necrosis (tissue death), and speeds up graft survival. We recommend 1–2 sessions immediately after surgery.

2. Laser Hair Therapy (LLLT)

  • The Tech: Low-Level Laser Light stimulates cell metabolism (ATP production).
  • The Benefit: It reduces inflammation and wakes up dormant follicles, potentially reducing the severity of Shock Loss.

3. PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)

  • The Boost: We often perform a PRP session during surgery. We recommend a follow-up session at Month 1 and Month 3 to feed the resting roots with growth factors.

Lifestyle Restrictions: The "Do Not" List

To protect your investment, strictly avoid the following:

  • Sunlight: Direct UV rays can scar the healing skin and damage the follicles. Wear a hat whenever outside for the first 6 months.
  • Smoking/Vaping: Nicotine constricts blood vessels. Smoking is the #1 cause of graft failure. If you cannot quit, you must stop for at least 2 weeks post-op.
  • Gym/Heavy Lifting: Avoid for 2 weeks. High blood pressure can pop out grafts or cause bleeding.
  • Swimming:
    • Chlorinated Pools: Avoid for 1 month.
    • Ocean: Avoid for 1 month.
  • Sauna/Steam Room: Avoid for 1 month (heat causes swelling).
  • Hair Dye/Toppik: Do not use chemical dyes or concealer fibers for at least 6 weeks.

When to Call Us

Complications are rare in a hospital setting, but you must be vigilant. Contact your Liv Patient Coordinator immediately if you see:

  • Necrosis: The skin turns black or dark purple. This is a sign of tissue death and is a medical emergency.
  • Pus: Yellow or green discharge oozing from the donor or recipient area.
  • Fever: Temperature above 38°C (100.4°F).

Uncontrolled Bleeding: If gentle pressure doesn’t stop bleeding after 10 minutes.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

When can I wear a hat?

You can usually wear a loose-fitting hat after 3 to 5 days once the risk of dislodging grafts has passed, but avoid tight caps for at least two weeks.

You should wait until all scabs have fallen off and the incisions are fully healed, typically after two weeks, before using concealers or fibers.

Yes, the scalp is numb and can burn easily, and sun exposure can cause pigmentation of the healing scars; wear a hat or use sunscreen after the first two weeks.

You can cut the donor area after 2 weeks, but wait at least 1 month before using scissors on the recipient area and 3 months before using clippers.

If you bump your head in the first few days, check for bleeding; if a graft is dislodged, there will be blood; contact your clinic immediately for advice.
