Treatment and Recovery

Goals Of Foot Surgery Treatment

The primary objective of treatment for foot structural issues is to restore a functional, pain-free alignment that allows for normal weight-bearing. The approach is determined by the specific “failure” identified during the diagnostic phase. For some, treatment involves a targeted Bunionectomy; for others, it requires extensive Foot Surgery And Deformity Reconstruction. At Liv Hospital, we follow a multidisciplinary strategy, ensuring that while the bones are being realigned, the patient’s nutritional and systemic health are optimized for healing. Success is defined by the patient’s return to a normal lifestyle and a significant reduction in chronic limb discomfort.

The Bunionectomy Surgical Process

ORTHOPEDIC

The Bunionectomy is a highly refined surgical event designed to realign the big toe joint. On the day of your operation, you will be welcomed into our modern surgical facility.

  • The procedure is typically performed under regional anesthesia (a nerve block) with sedation.
  • The surgeon realigns the bone (osteotomy) and secures it with tiny, specialized screws.
  • Tight ligaments are released, and loose ones are tightened to balance the joint.

The entire process usually takes about an hour, followed by a short period of monitoring in our specialized recovery suite.

Hammertoe Correction Techniques

ORTHOPEDIC

Modern medicine has introduced several advanced methods for Hammertoe Correction to improve visual and physical results.

  • Minimizing incisions to reduce scarring.
  • Using internal “pins” or permanent implants to hold the toe straight.
  • Addressing multiple toes simultaneously if needed.

By utilizing these precision techniques, specialists at Liv Hospital can ensure that the toes are balanced perfectly, which is essential for wearing standard shoes comfortably again.

Advanced Metatarsal Surgery Approaches

During Metatarsal Surgery, the focus is on redistributing pressure away from painful areas.

  • Shortening or elevating specific metatarsal bones to balance the ball of the foot.
  • Utilizing minimally invasive “keyhole” techniques to speed up recovery.
  • Relieving pressure on nerves to eliminate “burning” sensations.

This procedure restores the mechanical harmony of the forefoot, allowing the biological healing process to provide long-term relief from metatarsalgia.

The Role Of Heel Spur/Fasciitis Surgery

When conservative measures fail, Heel Spur/Fasciitis Surgery provides mechanical relief for the heel.

  • The surgeon performs a “partial release” of the plantar fascia.
  • Bony spurs are removed if they are physically interfering with the tissue.
  • Most procedures are now performed endoscopically through a tiny opening.

This proactive approach is a hallmark of the specialized care at Liv Hospital, allowing patients to return to walking without the sharp “first-step” pain in the morning.

Biological Integration In Tendon Repair/Transfer

Successful Tendon Repair/Transfer depends on the body’s ability to heal soft tissue. Our protocols are designed to protect the repair while it “takes root.”

  • Using high-strength biological anchors to secure tendons to bone.
  • Early gentle range-of-motion exercises to prevent the tendon from sticking.
  • Nutritional support with collagen-building blocks to fuel the repair.

By engaging in a structured biological recovery, you support the circulation needed for the tendon to regain its full tensile strength.

FOOT SURGERY

Complex Foot Surgery And Deformity Reconstruction

For severe cases, Foot Surgery And Deformity Reconstruction involves multi-stage planning.

  • Rebuilding the arch using bone grafts and ligament reinforcements.
  • Fusing unstable joints to provide a solid base for walking.
  • Correcting rotational deformities that affect the entire leg.

Restoring the skeletal foundation is a hallmark of the expert care we provide at Liv Hospital. We take no chances with your recovery, providing a secure and professional environment for your body to heal.

Managing Post-Operative Pain And Safety

Controlling discomfort in the early days is a top clinical priority. We utilize a “multi-modal” pain management strategy.

  • Long-acting nerve blocks that keep the foot numb for the first 24-48 hours.
  • Anti-inflammatory medications that support the biological healing phase.
  • Cold compression therapy to reduce deep tissue swelling.

By “cooling down” the surgical site, we prevent the excessive formation of internal scar tissue. Liv Hospital’s approach ensures that your body’s healing response is channeled into recovery rather than unnecessary inflammation.

The Role Of Wound Care In Visual Success

The visual success of your surgery depends on proper wound care. Our nursing staff will teach you how to monitor the incision at home.

  • Keeping the surgical dressing clean and dry.
  • Watching for signs of redness or unusual drainage.
  • Understanding the importance of elevation to prevent “throbbing” pain.

A healthy, well-healed scar is an indicator of a successful orthopedic recovery. We are dedicated to ensuring that your surgical site heals cleanly, leaving you with a result you can be proud of.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long will I be off work?

This varies widely. For desk jobs, you might return in 1-2 weeks if you can keep your foot elevated. For jobs requiring standing or heavy lifting, you might be off for 6–12 weeks, depending on the bone’s healing.

You cannot drive while taking narcotic pain medication. If surgery was on your left foot and you drive an automatic, you can drive once off meds. You have to wait until you can brake abruptly and painlessly if your right foot was operated on; this usually takes 4-6 weeks.

When you lower your foot, blood rushes into the dilated vessels, causing the foot to turn deep red or purple. This is normal after foot surgery. Elevating the foot will cause the color to return to normal quickly.

The surgical boot (CAM walker) protects the bone while it heals. For bone cuts (osteotomies), this is usually 4-6 weeks. For fusions, it can take 6–10 weeks. Your X-rays will determine when it is safe to transition to shoes.

If you stumble and put weight on the foot, you might feel a sharp pain. If the pain subsides quickly, it is likely fine. If the pain persists, swelling increases, or the shape of the foot looks different, call your surgeon immediately.
