What Are the Symptoms of Ankylosing Spondylitis Disorders?
The most common symptom is dull pain and stiffness in the lower back and hips. This pain typically develops slowly over several weeks or months. Unlike normal backaches the stiffness is usually worst in the morning or after sitting for a long time.
Common symptoms include:
The exact cause is a combination of genetics and environment. It is not caused by heavy lifting or injury. In people with a genetic tendency the immune system mistakenly triggers inflammation. This inflammation attacks the attachment points of tendons and ligaments in the spine.
Potential factors include:
Recognizing early signs is difficult because they often resemble common back strain. However specific patterns can serve as red flags. The onset is usually gradual rather than sudden.
Watch for these early indicators:
Fatigue is a major symptom that is often overlooked. It is not just tiredness from lack of sleep. It is a deep exhaustion caused by the body continually fighting inflammation. The body uses a lot of energy to manage the immune response leaving patients feeling drained.
Contributing factors:
The disease often presents differently in women leading to misdiagnosis. Men are more likely to have the classic fusion of the spine seen on X-rays. Women may have more widespread pain and less visible damage on standard imaging.
Differences to note:
The course of the disease is unpredictable. Some people have mild symptoms that never get worse while others experience a steady decline. The disease is characterized by flares and periods of remission. During a flare symptoms become intense and debilitating requiring adjustments in treatment.
A hallmark feature of this condition is enthesitis. This is inflammation where tendons and ligaments attach to the bone. It sets this disease apart from other forms of arthritis. It commonly affects the back of the heel the bottom of the foot and the connections between ribs and breastbone.
