The treatment philosophy at Liv Hospital is centered on reducing inflammation and restoring full function to the joint. For most patients the journey begins with conservative management. This often involves the RICE protocol which stands for rest ice compression and elevation. Resting the affected joint is the most critical step because it stops the repetitive friction that caused the inflammation in the first place.
Icing the area for short periods several times a day helps to constrict the blood vessels and reduce the accumulation of fluid. Compression with an elastic bandage can also help manage swelling in superficial joints like the elbow or knee. While these steps seem simple they are incredibly effective at allowing the body to heal itself naturally. We provide our patients with a clear schedule for these home treatments to ensure they are done safely and effectively.
Following a structured recovery plan is essential for a successful outcome. We guide you through each step to ensure you get back to your routine.
Once the acute pain and swelling have subsided the next phase of treatment at Liv Hospital is physical therapy. Our therapists design customized exercise programs to address the underlying cause of the bursitis. Often the inflammation is triggered because certain muscles are too weak or too tight causing the joint to move out of its proper alignment.
Stretching exercises improve the flexibility of the tendons and muscles that pass over the bursa reducing friction. Strengthening exercises focus on the supporting muscles that stabilize the joint. For example if you have hip bursitis we may focus on strengthening the gluteal muscles to provide better support for the hip joint. This long term approach not only treats the current episode but also builds a stronger more resilient body.
Our rehabilitation programs are tailored to your specific needs. We focus on building a balanced and stable musculoskeletal system.
In cases where conservative treatments do not provide enough relief we may recommend therapeutic injections. These are performed by our specialists at Liv Hospital using advanced guidance technology to ensure the medication is delivered precisely into the bursa sac. This targeted approach provides concentrated relief to the site of inflammation without affecting the rest of the body.
The injection works by calming the synovial lining and stopping the overproduction of fluid. Many patients experience a significant reduction in pain within a few days of the procedure. This relief can create a window of opportunity where physical therapy becomes much easier and more effective. While injections are not always the first choice they are a valuable tool for managing stubborn or severe inflammation.
When pain persists we use precise methods to deliver the care you need. Our goal is to minimize discomfort and maximize recovery.
If a bursa sac is severely swollen it can create a significant amount of pressure and pain. In these situations our specialists may perform fluid aspiration. Using a thin needle the doctor carefully removes the excess fluid from the sac. This provides almost immediate relief from the pressure and allows the joint to move more freely.
This procedure also serves a diagnostic purpose as the removed fluid can be analyzed to check for infection or metabolic issues. After the fluid is removed we may apply a compression wrap to prevent it from accumulating again. Aspiration is a common and safe procedure that can significantly speed up the recovery process for joints with visible swelling like the knee or elbow.
Pressure relief is a key part of managing acute inflammation. We use safe and effective techniques to reduce joint tension.
While surgery for bursitis is rare it may be considered if the condition remains chronic and does not respond to any non surgical treatments. At Liv Hospital we explore all other options before discussing operative interventions. If surgery is required the goal is usually to remove the thickened or damaged bursa sac entirely a procedure known as a bursectomy.
The human body is remarkably adaptive and a new healthy bursa sac will usually grow back in its place after several months. Most of these procedures can be performed using minimally invasive techniques meaning smaller incisions and a faster recovery. Our surgical team uses the latest technology to ensure the highest level of precision and the best possible outcome for our patients.
We only recommend surgery when it is truly necessary for your long term health and mobility. Our team will discuss all the details with you clearly.

No therapeutic injections are performed on an outpatient basis and you can usually go home immediately after the procedure.
If the exercises are done too early or too intensely they can cause irritation but our therapists adjust the program to your comfort level.
It is considered a significant procedure but it is often performed through small incisions and has a very high success rate for chronic cases.
We usually limit the number of injections to protect the health of the surrounding tendons and will discuss the best schedule for your case.
Your return to sports should be gradual and is typically allowed once you have full range of motion and no pain during normal activities.
