Treatment and Management

The Procedure Day Experience

On the day of your weight loss procedure, you will arrive at our modern clinical facility at Liv Hospital. The environment is designed to be professional, calm, and efficient. Most patients are naturally a bit nervous, but our staff is trained to provide reassurance at every step. You will be prepared for the procedure, which usually takes only 20 to 30 minutes. Because most of these interventions are outpatient, you will likely be able to return home after a few hours of observation in our recovery suite.

Placing The Endoscopic Balloon

Gastric balloon

For models like the Single-balloon System or the Dual-balloon System, the placement is performed endoscopically.

  • The patient is given a mild sedative to ensure comfort.
  • The gastroenterologist inserts the endoscope to visualize the stomach.
  • The deflated balloon is passed through the esophagus into the stomach.
  • Once the position is confirmed, the balloon is filled with sterile saline or air via a small tube.
  • The tube is disconnected, and the self-sealing valve on the balloon closes.
The entire process is visual and controlled, ensuring that the balloon is resting in the widest part of the stomach to maximize its effect on satiety.

The Swallowable Gastric Balloon Procedure

The Swallowable Gastric Balloon is a unique clinical procedure that does not require an endoscope or anesthesia.

  • The patient swallows a small capsule containing the balloon.
  • A specialist uses a portable X-ray to confirm the capsule is in the stomach.
  • The balloon is filled with 550ml of fluid through a very thin catheter.
  • Another X-ray confirms the balloon is fully inflated.
  • The catheter is gently pulled away, and the procedure is finished.

This revolutionary approach allows patients to walk in and out of the clinic in less than 20 minutes, making it a highly convenient option for busy individuals.

Inflating With Saline Versus Air

The choice of filling material is determined during the treatment planning phase.

  • Saline-filled: These provide a significant feeling of fullness and are the most common. They are often tinted with a safe blue dye as a safety indicator.
  • Air-filled: These are much lighter and may be better tolerated by patients who are particularly sensitive to stomach pressure.

Both methods are effective at occupying space, but saline is often preferred for its “weighty” feel, which many patients find helps them feel full more consistently.

Adjustable Gastric Balloon Modification

If a patient is using an Adjustable Gastric Balloon, a secondary clinical procedure may occur a few months into the treatment.

  • If weight loss has stalled, the physician can perform a quick endoscopy to add more saline, increasing the balloon’s size.
  • If the patient is struggling with persistent nausea, some saline can be removed to improve comfort.

This ability to fine-tune the treatment ensures that the patient can complete the full course of therapy and achieve the best possible results.

The Initial 48 Hours: The Adaptation Phase

The most important part of the treatment “procedure” is actually the 48 hours following placement. During this time, the stomach is trying to digest the balloon, which it perceives as a large piece of food.

  • Patients typically experience nausea and cramping.
  • A liquid-only diet is mandatory for the first few days.
  • Specialized medications are provided by Liv Hospital to manage these temporary side effects.

Our medical team stays in close contact with patients during this window to provide guidance and ensure they stay hydrated and comfortable.

Gastrointestinal Bleeding

Transitioning Through Dietary Phases

Once the balloon is settled, the treatment involves a structured transition back to solid food.

  • Days 1-3: Clear liquids only.
  • Days 4-10: Pureed and soft foods.
  • Day 11 onward: Slow reintroduction of small portions of solid, healthy foods.

This transition is guided by our clinical dietitians to ensure the stomach is not overwhelmed. Learning to eat with the balloon is a key part of the behavioral modification that leads to long-term success.

Removal Of The Gastric Balloon

Except for the swallowable type, all balloons must be removed endoscopically after six to twelve months.

  • The procedure is similar to placement and is done under sedation.
  • A needle is used to puncture the balloon and suction out the fluid or air.
  • A grasping tool is used to pull the deflated silicone shell out through the mouth.
  • The stomach lining is inspected one last time to ensure everything is healthy.

For the swallowable type, the balloon deflates automatically after about four months and is passed through the bowels, requiring no clinical removal procedure.
